JYJ - The Legendary Survivors (Part 1)

We wills start off  with DBSK 13 years contract.

As we know, DBSK originally consists of:

Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun, Kim Junsu, Shim Changmin & Jung Yunho
The 5 of them debuted under SM in 2009, and soon rose to stardom and became a legendary boyband in the Kpop industry.
Despite at the peak of popularity, JYJ risked their career and filed a lawsuit against SM.

Here is the ugly truth behind their success.

THE SLAVE CONTRACT:
1. SM took all the earnings from all DBSK activities.
2. The copyright of the member's self-composed songs is registered under SM. - no matter what, the members cant perform those songs without SM permission
3. If the contract is terminated by all means, DBSK will have to pay triple fold of the promoted fees, and twice amount of the estimated profit to SM.
4. From the income given to DBSK, they have to cover the expenses incurred for overseas promotions, stylists, dancers, and all the staffs.
5. Their album sales must exceed 500,000 copies, or else they will receive 0 income.
6. The members are required to participate in activities despite:
Being injured

  • Sick

Throughout those years, Cassiopeias had been deceived that the members were living a good life, as they never fail to keep their fatigue, and suffering to themselves, and pun on a 'healthy-looking' image

In life there is always a limit....
Eventually Jaejoong, Yoochun & Junsu thinks that something was not right, thus a lawsuit was filed to claim their rights...

DBSK5 Debut

DBSK DEBUT:

Unlike the manifesting of new k-pop groups who have lots of opportunities
to gain popularity upon debut, DBSK members started off from a scratch.
During their debut in 14/2/2004, the craze of idol groups was deteriorating fast,
but they hold on to their faith, and persevered through an arduous struggle for years
before they can finally enjoy the fruit of success in Korea.

October 2004 :

  1.  They received mainstream recognition following the release of their physical single album HUG
  2. Their struggle, hard work and dedication towards their dream had paid off when their first studio album TRI-ANGLE and RISING SUN became the top seller whereby 100,000 copies was sold.
April 2005:

  1. Under a management company, AVEX, DBSK was given a golden opportunity to penetrate into the Japanese market.
  2. TVXQ entered the Japanese-language market in April 2005 with their debut single "Stay with Me Tonight", but their first Japanese album Heart Mind and Soul was met with limited success. (source: Wikipedia)
27 April 2005:
  1. Being known as a Kpop legend in Korea, they expect to perform in front of thousands, but only 500 people turned up to watch their performance.
  2. Since none of them were fluent in Japanese language, they felt stranded in a foreign land.
  3. They had no one to turn to, but among themselves.
  4. It took them years to master Japanese language, and make their first hit in Japan.
  5. They finally received recognition as Jpop artiste, because they took the efforts to master Japanese language and culture, and started from nothing.
2009:
  1. Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu were determined to leave SM Entertainment, while Yunho and Changmin chose to stay.
Mid 2009:
  1. Jaejoong, Yoochun & Junsu filed a lawsuit against their label company SM Entertainment to terminate their (13 years) slave contract.
31-12-2009
  1. The legendary Kpop band, DBSK finally disband after performing Stand By You at NHK 60th Kouhaku Uta Gasse.

PRE-DEBUT STORIES OF:

Kim Jaejoong
Despite's family objection of his lifetime dream of becoming a singer, Jaejoong left his hometown at the age of 15, and signed up for SM Entertainment audition in Seoul.Eventually, he passed the audition and secured a 7 years contract + 2 years of training.

HIS STRUGGLE BEGINS...

Without his family's financial support to pay for the training classes, this young boy struggled against all odd to make ends meet. He took up various jobs such as working in the restaurant, selling chewing gums and appeared as a movie extra

His income was then spent on paying for his lessons. Since, the balance left isn't enough to pay for his apartment fee, reluctantly he walked for three hours to his (restaurant) workplace. Fortunately, on his way, he saw a donation booth, and donated his blood in exchange for some biscuits.

Due to his strong perseverance, Jaejoong finally achieved his ambition on becoming a singer and debuted as the eldest member of DBSK in 2004.

"I will continue to sing even if there's only one fan listening to me" - Jaejoong

KIM JUNSU (XIA/XIAH)
Junsu shared the same passion as Jaejoong; of becoming a singer.
If you think Jaejoong's pre-debut story is tear-jerking, Junsu's version is equally devastating.

Since it was his childhood dream of becoming a singer, he practiced hard as a trainee in SMe for
6 years. After years of hard work, when he was about to make his debut, his voice undergone changes during puberty. Despite feeling frustrated, he practiced even harder. Eventually, his strained voice just crack up and others just made fun of him.
Despite everyone thinks that he should just quit, and he started to have some doubts on whether he would be able to sing again, he never give up on his dream.
Eventually, his perseverance and strong faith for himself pays off, when he successfully made his debut as a member of the legendary K-pop band DBSK
